Though visually appealing, Himalayan Balsam is a highly invasive weed, much like Japanese Knotweed. Its rapid growth, towering size, and ability to flourish in low-light environments allow it to dominate other plants, blocking their access to sunlight and ultimately outcompeting them.
Himalayan Balsam spreads quickly due to its prolific seed production. The plant stores seeds in fruit pods at its top, which burst open when mature or disturbed, launching seeds up to seven meters away in all directions.
Introduced by Victorian gardeners as an ornamental species, Himalayan Balsam is a striking plant, often called Policeman’s Helmet or Touch-me-not Balsam due to the distinctive shape of its blooms.
While its roots are not as deep as those of Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam is still challenging to eliminate. For complete removal, we recommend professional herbicide treatments to ensure eradication.
